AC 196 - Christmas Eve. Preventer Agent "Water" (Sally Po), on patrol between the Earth and the colonies comes across a strange metal object floating around in space. She determines it's made of neo-titanium and wonders where it might have come from.
Duo Maxwell and Quatre Raberba Winner are seen sealing four gundams: Wing Zero Custom, Deathsythe Hell Custom, Heavyarms Custom, and Sandrock Custom into a scrap satellite. Apparently Wufei did not send his gundam, Altron, in to be destroyed with the rest. The two ex-pilots say good byes to their mechs and launch the satellite to the sun to be destroyed. Duo wonders what Heero and Trowa are doing.
On the resource satellite pf MO2, which acted as the base of operations for the World Nation in the Eve Wars, the new United Earth Nation is celebrating the one-year anniversary of the end of the war. The newly elected President is making a grand speech about how wonderful it is to have acheived peace at last. Watching this are Noin and Une, who feel out of place, given their respective positions in the Preventers.
Leaving the ceremony, Noin (code named "Fire") talks with Sally about the object she found. Sally tells her, rather cryptically, that it might be "The Thirteenth Zodiac Sign." Another mobile suit perhaps?
Down on Colony L3X18999, the main colony in the L3 cluster, Relena is drugged while on a diplomatic mission and is kidnapped.
In another room in the same comple that houses Relena, Dekim Barton and his granddaughter, Mariemeia Khushrenada, also watch the speech. Afterwards, Mariemeia says, "We have to give everybody Father's birthday present," as the view of a hanger full of mobile dolls comes up.
We then see a very buffed up Trowa, working around the Circus with Catherine when he notices some suspicious-looking men peering into the tent. He follows them and they attack him, which he easily repels. He notices an ID badge on the one man that says, "Barton Foundation." At that point, Trowa remembers a time in the past, before he took on the name of Trowa Barton. He was working for the family as an MS mechanic and the real Trowa walked into the hanger one day. Referring to the boy we know as Trowa, "Nanashi," or no-name," he calls himn over and wraps one arm around him, holding a picture in his hand. It shows a woman and a young girl. The real Trowa Barton points to the girl and tells, "Nanashi" that she will rule Earth after Operation Meteor is successfully complete.
Elsewhere in space, Heero Yuy is once again at a computer, this time checking on Mariemeia's background. Duo shows up and Heero gets up to leave saying Relenaa has been kidnapped. Duo wonders whether Heero has a crush on her or something.
Back on L3X18999, Dekim Barton has amassed his troops and is addressing them. In the middle of it, he pulls a gun out and singles Trowa out of the crowd of soldiers. Trowa does what he always does a triple flip high in the air to land right in front of Dekim. He begins to pull out a gun when he's stopped by the tip of a sword in his face. Wufei's swrod, to be exact. Wufei apparently became a bodyguard for Dekim Barton as well as one of Mariemeia's soldiers.
Sally tells Noin that the neo-Titanium object orginated in the L3 cluster and predicts the main colony will either declare independence or war very soon. She also informs Noin of Relena's disappearance from her diplomatic mission.
Relena herself is waking up, in a large bedroom. Next to her is a young girl who claims to tbe the daughter of Treize Khushrenda, and therfor the "rightful heir" to the World Nation created by her father. She claims the actions she is taking are simply the wishes of her late father.
Meanwhile, Heero and Duo head for L3 in a shuttle. Heero is sleeping and begins dreaming of a time when he was 14 years old and lying on the grass in a park. A very young girl with a small puppy approaches him and asks if he's lost. He tells her he's been lost his whole life and she tells him that's sad. She also says that she is walking her puppy, Mary. Handing him a flower, she says its for him and then runs off after the dog. The next thing we see is Heero, at night, planting explosives at an OZ base near the park. Then fired it perfectly and he looks pleased, but as he is turning to leave, a nearby mobile suit is rocked so hard by one of the blasts that it falls into another MS which in turns crashes into a block of civilian apartments. Heero is horrified to see the apartment building go up in flames. The next morning, he goes through it and finds the girl's singed teddy bear, and the lifeless body of Mary, the puppy. He's still clutching the flower the now-dead girl gave him as he scoops up the puppy and cradles it in his arms. As he does this we hear voiceovers of Dr. J and Dekim Barton where Dekim is saying Heero must be retained because, "weapons don't need to feel kindness."
Duo wakes Heero up in time to hear an announcement from Mariemeia. The colony of L3X18999, under her control, is declaring itself to be independent of the United Earth Nation and is simultaneously declaring war on Earth. Preventer cheif Une takes an irate call from the President and then recieves a vistor who requests a code name, preferably wind: Zechs Merquies has returned!
Sally and Noin, now patrolling around L3's perimeter, intercept Heero and Duo's ship. The two women provode back-up firepower in order for Duo to guide the ship into the colony itself. Duo manages to punch through the strong defenses of Mariemeia's troops have put up and the ship crashes into one of the colonies spaceship hangers.
Meanwhile, Quatre and the Manguanacs are in a ship heading to intercept the scrap satellite and retreive the gundams before they hit the sun.
Heero and Duo are faced with enemy mobile suits as they enter the colony. As they fight them off, Duo realizes that he is fighting against Trowa, whom he calls a traitor. Heero figures out that he's up against Wufei Chang.
